As more and more people do gigs\nrather than full-time jobs, who will pay them \u2013 payroll or the accounts\ndepartment? Come to think of it, will large corporates and their payroll\ndepartments even exist in the virtual era of nimble newcomers?<\/p>\n\n\n<p>These are some of the questions\nabout the future that Accsys\u2019s leadership team are keeping in their sights\nwhile dealing with today\u2019s dilemmas \u2013 of which there are plenty.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n<p>When it comes to innovation, for\ninstance, the following catch-22 comes to mind, says CEO Teryl Schroenn:<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs an IT company, we have got to\nbe innovative, which means we have got to take risks \u2013 and then we have risk.\nSo how do we innovate while maintaining stability and limiting risk to our\nclients?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Consider that some of Accsys\u2019s\nclients have upwards of 25&nbsp;000 people on their payrolls and operate right\nacross Sub-Saharan Africa, from South Africa to Senegal, and it\u2019s clear that\nfinding the balance between innovation and stability is a real business\nimperative.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>In fact, it\u2019s one that Accsys,\nwhich has clients doing business in 19 African countries, is tackling right\nnow. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are busy with a massive update\nthat we have been preparing for since last October,\u201d says Teryl. \u201cWe are always\nour own guinea pigs, so we started testing the update in our own payroll. After\ntwo months, we ran it live on two client sites and now we are starting with\nsome of our bigger clients.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>It sounds so simple but it\u2019s\nactually not: with clients operating in 19 countries, the update has to\naccommodate 19 different national tax frameworks, not to mention a host of\nother country-specific salary and employment details.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>This update not only caters for\nclients\u2019 current payroll requirements but is part of the evolution towards a\ndigital future that is unfolding as we speak. \u201cInnovation means making sure you\nhave a product that people can use now and that works, while also being mindful\nof how things are changing and the impact of digital on payroll,\u201d says Teryl. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>Talking of change, what does she\nthink the future holds for large corporates and their payrolls? <\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think people and companies are like countries,\u201d she says. \u201cSome want to be their own country, like Catalan or Scotland, and some want to be centralised, like Russia.
