Business objectives are the golden thread <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n

Yes, Cura Risk\nManagement is a software company but when it talks about integrating and\nlinking systems, it isn\u2019t speaking from a software perspective. It means\nbusiness \u2013 the governance, risk and compliance (GRC business).<\/p>\n\n\n

\u201cOur focus is on\nmaking sure that our business objectives link throughout the entire organisation,\nand to our vision, mission and overall purpose,\u201d says Jessica Knight, head of\nStrategy. \u201cWithout that systemic integration, you will have misalignment,\nduplicated work effort and inefficiencies. Those are things we try to overcome\nby making sure our objectives are the golden thread running through the\nbusiness.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n

Every activity and\nfunction of the company is linked to its objectives, of which it has two types:\nstrategic objectives and Big Hairy Audacious Goals, or BHAGs.<\/p>\n\n\n

The difference\nbetween them is that strategic objectives are specific, relatively attainable\nbusiness goals, which then roll up into BHAGs, which are \u201cslightly\nunattainable\u201d so that the company never gets to the point where it has nowhere\nto go and nothing to strive for.<\/p>\n\n\n

\u201cBHAGs keep you\nmoving forward and can catapult growth into a disruptive space,\u201d says Jessica.\nOne of its BHAGs, for instance, is to have a significant presence on each\ncontinent across the globe. <\/p>\n\n\n

This might seem slightly\nunattainable for a small South African company but not impossible since Cura,\nfounded in 2002, is already in Australia, India, Malaysia and the United\nStates. That means there are only two continents still to go.<\/p>\n\n\n

The company has\nseveral strategic tools that it uses to maintain that golden thread between\nwhat it does and the business objectives it strives for.<\/p>\n\n\n

One is a\nstakeholder ecosystem analysis, where Cura breaks up its ecosystem into all\nstakeholders affecting and affected by its business, now and in the future. It\nhas 27 to 30 stakeholder relationships and it has linked every one of them to its\nbusiness objectives and assigned a level of importance to each stakeholder\nrole.<\/p>\n\n\n

\u201cIn this way, we\ncan assess what each stakeholder would like from us now and in the future, and\nhow we can serve each stakeholder, now and in the future,\u201d says Jessica.\nAnother key tool for keeping that golden thread\ngoing is Cura\u2019s strategy document, which is constantly being reviewed and\nrefined, and now runs into over 80 pages. \u201cIt never stops,\u201d she says. \u201cWe are now\nin a very dynamic time and we are a small business but very complex.
