{"id":2061,"date":"2021-06-11T12:11:04","date_gmt":"2021-06-11T12:11:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.tt100.co.za\/?p=2061"},"modified":"2021-06-11T12:11:04","modified_gmt":"2021-06-11T12:11:04","slug":"spark-atm-systems-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tt100.org\/index.php\/2021\/06\/11\/spark-atm-systems-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Spark ATM Systems"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tt100.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/JCP-59-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2063\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n<p>Spark ATM Systems, winner of the Management of People Award\nin the large enterprise category<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u2018There are no skills shortages for an employer of choice\u2019<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n<p>South Africa\u2019s talent pool has never been healthier, and\nit\u2019s clear that Russel Berman of Spark ATM Systems is not joking when he says\nthis.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere are no skills shortages for an employer of choice,\u201d\nsays Russel, Sales and Marketing Director. \u201cIt amazes me the number of times\npeople who apply say \u2018We\u2019ve heard from our friends what a cool place Spark is to\nwork at\u2019. &nbsp;We have never found it\ndifficult to find talent.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sparkatm.co.za\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tt100.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Spark-Logo.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2062\"\/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>This is despite the fact that the payment systems industry\nitself is small. \u201cWe hire for attitude and train for skill,\u201d he says,\nexplaining that rather than recruit from just one or two industries, Spark\nlikes to hire young graduates from a variety of industries. \u201cThey bring in\ntheir own ideas and fresh concepts.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>One of the qualities that makes Spark sit up and notice is a\nproblem-solving mindset. \u201cWe look for self-starters who approach a problem with\na solution. The team here know not to say, \u2018I\u2019ve got this problem, what should\nI do?\u2019 Rather, it\u2019s \u2018I\u2019ve encountered this problem and our possible solutions\nare x, y or z and I suggest y. Nine times out of 10, they are making the right\ncall and this way we are encouraging sound decision making habits,\u201d Russel\nsays.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>If a company wants to attract and retain self-starting, creative-thinking,\nproblem-solving people it had better have the people management policies to\nmatch. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cOne area where we are unique is that we pay two bonuses per\nyear \u2013 in December and in the middle of the year, for star performers,\u201d says\nRussel. These six-monthly stars are nominated by their managers, reviewed by a\ncommittee and confirmed by Spark\u2019s executive committee.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Other components of the company\u2019s work hard, play hard\napproach are gym facilities at both offices (in Cape Town and Johannesburg),\nregular wellness events and, pre-pandemic, weekly socials and team breakfasts\nevery Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>With all this, and more, Spark is generally a happy,\nproductive group of high-performing people. But just as it strives to identify\nand reward the top performers, the company knows there will also always be a\nsmall percentage of underperformers. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are always looking for the bottom 10% who need to be\nprocess-managed out of the business,\u201d says Russel, referring to the 20-70-10\nrule coined by former General Electric CEO Jack Welch.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Good people management is, after all, not only about making\nthe popular decisions but the hard choices too.
