Let your people do the talking<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n

One day, when Ventso Group is a\nhousehold name, it will still be doing at least some of the things that its\nemployees like so much about it today.<\/p>\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s the culture,\u201d says Nomtha\nGobe, CEO of this fledgling corporate identity and branding company. \u201cIt\u2019s a\nwarm environment and we\u2019re very close knit. The word \u2018home\u2019 comes to mind but I\ndon\u2019t want to create the idea that it\u2019s just this comfortable space.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n

She pauses, then makes up her\nmind. <\/p>\n\n\n

\u201cOkay, I\u2019m going to go ahead and\nsay home. It\u2019s a family culture. There\u2019s the brother you always fight with and\nlove, and the annoying cousin who always calls you out on your outfit so that\nyou always make an extra effort to look good… It\u2019s the kind of place where\nyou get support if you need it, or a push if you need it.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n

One of the people management\npractices that make Pretoria-based Ventso Group feel like family is its caring leadership\nstyle. <\/p>\n\n\n

\u201cZwanga is the kind of leader who\nknows what\u2019s going on with his people. If he sees you\u2019re not smiling like you\nnormally do, he will check,\u201d Nomtha says, referring to Zwanga Mabaya, a BCom\nlaw student who co-founded Ventso with Luther Mochabe in 2013, when they were\nboth 20 years old and had barely enough money to register the company.<\/p>\n\n\n

\u201cWe all check on each other,\u201d says\nZwanga, popping into the conversation briefly before deferring to Nomtha again.\n\u201cI prefer Nomtha to talk,\u201d he says. \u201cI don\u2019t want to blow my own trumpet and\nshe says it better anyway.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

Nomtha continues talking about\nwhat makes Ventso so special in her eyes. \u201cWe\u2019re a company of young people \u2013\nthat\u2019s number one \u2013 and we have always felt that we can\u2019t move without people,\nwhich is why we are always checking in with each other. Everybody\u2019s wellbeing\nis really important.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

This checking in goes beyond\nordinary, day-to-day \u201chow are you doing?\u201d conversations and includes weekly\ncheck-in meetings, a formal company meeting once a month and, last but most\ndefinitely not least, the annual teambuilding retreat.<\/p>\n\n\n

Every year (except for 2021 when\nCovid-19 got in the way), Ventso takes off for a camping weekend. \u201cWe go all\nout \u2013 we glamp,\u201d says Nomtha. \u201cFrom the Thursday to Sunday, we go to another\nprovince for team-building and self-building activities to connect as a team\nand understand each other better.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

This annual retreat is definitely a tradition that Ventso plans to keep no matter how large it becomes, says Nomtha. And it has big plans; very big plans. <\/p>\n\n\n

But some things will always stay the same.<\/p>\n\n\n
