But amid the\ntragedy of jobs lost and businesses bankrupted are reports of hope and\nresilience \u2013 of enterprises and entrepreneurs whose underlying technologies and\nbusiness models were supple enough to prepare them for the unexpected.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.curasoftware.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tt100.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Cura-Logo-Transparent-1-Ross-Saunders-1024x724.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1730\" width=\"229\" height=\"161\"\/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Cura Risk Management\nis one such company and so are a number of its clients. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cCompanies that have\nhad proper business continuity and risk strategies will come out of this quite\nwell because they were prepared for the unexpected,\u201d says Alex Roberts, Cura\u2019s Regional\nDirector: Sales and Operations. \u201cWe didn\u2019t know the unexpected would be a\npandemic specifically, but we did know that business interruption is South\nAfrica\u2019s top business risk and already had the necessary response plans in\nplace.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Quite a few of Cura\u2019s clients have let the company know that\nthey are weathering the pandemic better than expected because they use its\ntools. \u201cGovernance, compliance and risk services tend to be seen as a grudge\npurchase but when businesses experience the benefits of being compliant, acting\nethically and taking responsibility for their impact and employees, hopefully\nthe thinking will start to shift,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Apart from the ability to exercise future thinking, the\nsingle biggest asset a business can have in the quest to remain relevant,\nregardless of pandemics and other systemic shocks, is probably empathy.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cNew product development needs to be embedded in empathy so\nthat we understand what the end user is struggling with, get to know their pain\npoints and walk a little bit in their shoes,\u201d says Jess Knight, Strategic\nManager at Cura. \u201cThen we can define the problem, ideate, prototype, test and implement.\nIt all starts with empathy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>A pandemic-related pain point for almost every business is adjusting\nto the new normal and the complex and complicated lockdown regulations that go\nwith it, she says.
