Well, Netstar obviously didn\u2019t receive that particular memo. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>Adept at adapting, the company has embraced the Internet of\nThings (IoT) with an alacrity that would give even some start-ups a run for\ntheir money. Starting from scratch, it took Netstar less than 36 months \u2013 from\nincubation and testing to full production \u2013 to commercially launch its InsureTech\nplatform, making it one of the first vehicle-tracking companies to do so.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.netstar.co.za\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tt100.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Altron_Netstar_cmyk-fa-01-Quintin-de-Kok1-1-1024x658.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1675\" width=\"265\" height=\"170\"\/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>This shift necessitated some major changes, including Netstar\u2019s\ndecision to base its InsureTech platform on open source technology. Since open\nsource is to the internet what water is to fish, this has opened up a vast new\nvista of new business and market possibilities, including horse saddle and\nbicycle recovery, not to mention collision avoidance in the mining industry. As\nthe Netstar website puts it: \u201cNo IoT solution is out of our reach.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>While the company manages to make adapting to change look\neasy, a massive amount of research and development goes on behind the scenes to\nsmooth the way. Netstar\u2019s annual turnover is about ZAR 1,2 billion and its\nR&amp;D budget is 3.6% of that, representing a money-where-its-mouth-is\ninvestment that few other South African companies match. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>That R&amp;D investment goes hand in hand with a generous\ntraining budget and bursary scheme, ensuring that Netstar has the skills to oil\nthe wheels of change. This includes a growing focus on developing skills for\nthe Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR), including artificial intelligence and\nrobotics.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe world of work is changing and we, as a partner of the automotive industry, must be at the forefront,\u201d says Pamela Xaba, Head of Human Capital. \u201cWe are also focusing strongly on developing future leaders who can think out of the box and have a global mindset because we don\u2019t just operate in a South African context.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>This is a reference to Netstar\u2019s operations in Australia and\nits recent expansion into India, which is on track to become the world\u2019s\nthird-largest passenger vehicle market by 2021, presenting massive\nopportunities for service providers that think big and strike while the iron is\nhot.
