Excellence does not\nnecessarily mean perfection<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n

While a thesaurus might throw up synonyms such as\n\u201cperfection\u201d and \u201cflawlessness\u201d for the word \u201cexcellence\u201d, they don\u2019t mean the\nsame thing at all in the book of Teryl Schroenn, CEO of Accsys. The payroll and\nHR software company won no fewer than six awards in the 2018 tt100 competition,\nmore than any other winner.<\/p>\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n

\u201cExcellence is not doing everything perfectly; it means\nbeing on the right path \u2013 for now,\u201d she says, adding that this particular path does\nnot have an end destination. \u201cThe biggest mistake, in business or life, is\nthinking you\u2019ve gotten somewhere.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

In other words, complacency, resting on one\u2019s laurels or\ntaking success for granted are sure-fire ways to lose momentum and become\nstuck, whether as a person or a business. \u201cYou\u2019ve got to keep on asking what\u2019s\nnext and continue re-examining and questioning yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

Teryl and her fellow senior executives at Accsys do this\nregularly by looking at the company through the eyes of a stranger. \u201cWhen we\nwalk in the door, we ask ourselves what a stranger would see if they came into\nour offices.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

This is a useful exercise because a familiar eye, accustomed\nto the way things are done, tends to overlook things that a stranger might\ninstantly spot. <\/p>\n\n\n

Another valuable tool for keeping forward momentum in the\nbusiness is to constantly ask Accsys\u2019s people for feedback and to act upon it.\nThis is something many companies say they do but relatively few embed in their\nculture, let alone act on \u2013 which is why they might see the same issues keep\ncropping up again and again.<\/p>\n\n\n

At Accsys, formal and informal feedback mechanisms tend to\nbring new topics to light, some of them surprising. One of the latest to raise\nits head is the company\u2019s dress code. \u201cWe\u2019ve just done a confidential employee\nsurvey and found there are people who are not happy with the dress code; they think\nit\u2019s too formal,\u201d Teryl says. <\/p>\n\n\n

While no one felt adamantly enough about the issue to say\nthey strongly disagreed with the dress code, the fact that almost 30% of staff\nraised it in the survey meant it was important enough for the top management\nteam to take another look at. Teryl says they are looking at ways to \u201csoften\u201d\nthe dress code somewhat without going too far.\nThe company dress code might seem like a fairly\nminor business problem but that\u2019s actually the point: when you deal with the\nsmall issues as and when they arise, they won\u2019t escalate into big, intractable\ncrises.
