That\u2019s\nonly half the story. Quietly and without blowing its own horn, the company has\nreinvented itself as an Internet of Things (IoT) business built for the future\nwhen related to GSM connectivity.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.netstar.co.za\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tt100.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Altron_Netstar_cmyk-fa-01-Quintin-de-Kok1-1024x658.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1632\" width=\"318\" height=\"204\"\/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Netstar\u2019s IoT platform has opened up a host of new business\npossibilities that the company is wasting no time in exploring, says Francois\nStols, Chief Technology Officer. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>Based on open source technology \u2013 a departure from Netstar\u2019s\ntraditional closed-source model \u2013 the IoT platform is highly scalable, highly\nredundant and capable of ingesting \u201cmassive\u201d amounts of data for Netstar\u2019s\ncustomers, according to Francois.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>When he says massive amounts of data, he means massive\namounts. Between 250 million and 300 million messages a day are streamed via\nthe platform to insurance companies and brokers, as well as Netstar\u2019s own emergency\ncontrol centre. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>These millions of messages originate from over 700&nbsp;000 Netstar\nsubscribers with devices installed in cars and trucks on South Africa\u2019s roads\n(and some assets too; horse saddle recovery is another new market where Netstar\nis leaving its tracks).<\/p>\n\n\n<p>All this data has immense value for insurers and companies\nwith large vehicle fleets. \u201cThe better they understand driver behaviour, the\nbetter they can manage their business costs and risk,\u201d says Francois. \u201cSome of\nour insurance clients base their entire insurance model on the data we\nprovide.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>The beauty of Netstar\u2019s IoT platform is the flexibility and\nscalability that Francois mentioned earlier. Insurance players of all sizes use\nits data-streaming capabilities, from small and advanced brokerages through to large\nand major insurers.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>While the platform is the same for all, the communication medium and technology service is not. Small brokers are serviced through a web portal, mobile app and insurance dashboard, while advanced brokers have additional integration. Large insurers receive their data via the IoT platform from the devices installed in vehicles.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><video controls src=\"https:\/\/www.tt100.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Netstar-There-when-it-matters.mp4\"><\/video><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>\nNot content with being one of the first vehicle trackers to make headway with InsureTech, Netstar is lengthening its lead through paperless device fitment, automated capturing for workforce management and the like.
