As long as the focus is on finding the next house to\nbuild, the next passenger to fly or the next restaurant meal to serve,\nsustainability will probably remain elusive.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.accsys.co.za\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tt100.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Transaction-Capital-Accsys-logo-2-1024x342.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1564\" width=\"286\" height=\"95\"\/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Prospects for such businesses start looking even more\nprecarious in a higher risk environment of the VUCA variety &#8211; volatility, uncertainty,\ncomplexity and ambiguity \u2013 like the one in which South Africa now finds itself.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cRight now, how do you run a business that can withstand the\nups and downs? One way is to make sure that your income is not entirely dependent\non new sales. To be a sustainable business, you need a stable line of income,\u201d\nsays Teryl Schroenn, CEO of payroll and HR software company Accsys. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>For Accsys, which has been in business since 1981 (and a\ntt100 finalist and winner every year since 2006), that stable line of income comes\nfrom its ability to retain customers beyond the short term and so earn a mix of\nannuity and contract income.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Teryl explains.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhy do people use companies like ourselves? Because our\npromise is that we\u2019re going to keep you up to date with statutory requirements.\nEvery time the Budget comes out, our clients have to comply with a new Tax Act,\nand they rely on our software to do that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Bear in mind that Accsys has clients in 19 African\ncountries, which means keeping abreast of the tax and other payroll changes in\nall those countries. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf we were not a sustainable business with a stable line of\nincome \u2013 annuity income \u2013 it would be very difficult to keep on developing new\nstuff all the time while remaining financially stable.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Sustainability is not, of course, just about the financial bottom\nline. \u201cThe triple bottom line is always important,\u201d says Teryl. \u201cYou really\ncannot be an island. You do need to be part of an economic tribe and a social\ntribe.
