That attitude is called complacency and it doesn\u2019t go down well at\npayroll and HR software solutions company Accsys. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.accsys.co.za\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.tt100.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Transaction-Capital-Accsys-logo-1-1024x342.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1123\" width=\"345\" height=\"115\"\/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re constantly reinvestigating our systems and processes\nas if we had just bought the company and were walking in cold,\u201d says CEO Teryl\nSchroenn, who has regular conversations with fellow executives and other\nemployees to check what\u2019s still working and what\u2019s not.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/accsyspeopleman?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tt100.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/download-2.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1508\" width=\"33\" height=\"33\"\/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Such discussions can lead to interesting solutions in unexpected\naspects of the business. \u201cThis morning, feedback received from some of our\nstaff is that diversity is a major issue,\u201d Teryl says. \u201cOne of the things we\ncame up with is that for the next year, we will focus on one of the South\nAfrican languages so that we can all at least greet each other in it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Age diversity also helps keep the company\u2019s thinking fresh and creative, she says. \u201cThe youngest people here are interns straight out of school. The oldest person is 72. This cross-generational mix is important because it provides a blend of stability and new ideas.\u201d When some people are risk-averse, others risk-tolerant and the rest somewhere in between, the results are more likely to be working than if one or the other dominates.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/company\/accsys\/?originalSubdomain=za\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tt100.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/download-3.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1509\" width=\"32\" height=\"32\"\/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>And results says Teryl, are what count. \u201cThe implementation of any technology or system should be designed around outcomes and not the method. The question we ask is: What results do we require?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>That might seem like common sense but a surprising number of\ncompanies focus on method rather than results. For example, some businesses\nwill automate their payroll systems but keep the old Excel spreadsheet system\njust in case. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe one system checks the other,\u201d she says, adding that\nthis might sound like a good idea until you consider that it not only costs\nmore to run two parallel systems but it is also time-consuming \u2013 so there go\nany time-saving efficiencies management might have been hoping for. \u201cDon\u2019t just\ndo old things in a new way. You\u2019ve got to shift your thinking.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Something else to be on the lookout for is processes and\nsystems that employees are supposed to be following or using but aren\u2019t, Teryl\nsays. \u201cEnsure that what you think is happening is actually happening. People\ndon\u2019t like change and old habits die hard. If you change something and no one\nis really watching, people will fall back into their old ways.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/AccsysSA\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tt100.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/download-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1507\" width=\"37\" height=\"37\"\/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Then there is the not-so-old clich\u00e9 about fixing things that\naren\u2019t broken. \u201cSometimes it is tempting to change something to make your own\nlife easier but, in the process, you might be making life more difficult for 10\nother people. You have to keep on asking yourself and others: Is this really\ngoing to drive the business forward?\u201d\nSo there you have it: Go to work every day\nlooking at your company as if you have just bought it and are walking through\nthe door for the first time.
