More accurately, perhaps, there is a <em>perception<\/em>\nthat there is less and less need for it.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Not at Netstar, where management by email or app has not\nreplaced good, old-fashioned face time.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>At least on a quarterly basis, the company\u2019s MD and other senior leaders participate in \u201cemployee townhalls\u201d at their head office in Midrand and conduct \u201cleadership roadshows\u201d in their regional offices across South Africa with their &nbsp;1 200 employees with the objective of keeping employees aligned to the company\u2019s purpose and strategy.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt is the way of life where employee engagement is\nconcerned\u201d, says Pamela Xaba, Head of Human Capital at Netstar.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>While Skype or the like would be easier, quicker and cheaper\n(and is used for other types of company communication), feedback from employees\nis that the roadshows and the quarterly townhall meetings are enormously\npopular and make a meaningful difference in the company\u2019s efforts to deepen\nemployee engagement.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cPeople can see what we look like and sound like; it makes\nus approachable and human as senior leaders,\u201d Pamela says. \u201cAs senior leaders,\nwe need to tell employees what the strategy is and why decisions are made so\nthat they don\u2019t hear it from others. If people aren\u2019t sure of the strategy,\nthey don\u2019t know where you are going. People shouldn\u2019t second-guess the company.\nThey should know what it stands for.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>While keeping employees abreast of company strategy and\ndirection is a prominent part of the townhall meetings, Netstar\u2019s senior\nleaders do as much listening as talking at the townhall meetings, she adds. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf you ask people what they think, and if the environment\nis open and transparent, they will come up with solutions \u2013 really good ones,\ntoo \u2013 and get excited about being part of the journey,\u201d says Pamela.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Just as important as listening to people\u2019s ideas is,\nfollowing up and seeing them through is also key. &nbsp;\u201cSo at the next townhall meeting, we will give\nfeedback on the input that came out of the previous round,\u201d says Pamela, adding\nthat this is part of putting the Netstar values which include openness, honesty\nand &nbsp;integrity, embracing diversity and\ninclusion, getting things done and enjoying doing it &nbsp;&nbsp;into\npractice.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>So even in this digital era, face time matters, and is here\nto stay.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Winner of the 2018 award for Excellence in the Management of People, category for large enterprises Our adjudicator Ann Naicker shares with us their experience of Netstar Why face time is so important in this digital era In this age of digital communication, there is less and less need for face-to-face communication.
