What works for a computer programmer might\nnot work for a human resources practitioner. What works for an introvert might\nnot work for an extrovert. What works today might not work next year. With so\nmany variables in the people management mix, there is only one hard-and-fast\nrule for Teryl Schroenn, CEO of multiple award-winning Accsys.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cConstantly ask people for\nfeedback and when you realise that something is working well, make sure that it\nhappens on a regular basis as opposed to by accident,\u201d she says. \u201cIf the\nfeedback shows that it isn\u2019t working or no longer works, adapt.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>This very morning, while having\na breakfast session with nine new employees \u2013 only one of whom was under 30 \u2013\nTeryl asked what was working for them and what wasn\u2019t. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey gave very positive\nfeedback on the culture we are trying to put in here,\u201d she says. \u201cOne of the\nthings they commented on was that \u2018the CEO actually knows our names\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Accsys has about 90 employees,\nwhich means quite a few names to remember, and Teryl goes beyond that if she\npossibly can. \u201cI try to remember how many children people have and what their\ninterests are. People are not resources. It\u2019s important to me to connect with\nthe people here.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>What people do sometimes find\nsurprising, she says, is her preference for an office with four walls and a\ndoor. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cSome people say management\nshould get away from the \u2018corner office\u2019 and make everything open plan. I\u2019m not\na fan because we work with a lot of confidential documents. I do spend a lot of\ntime in the open-plan space, though, and also going out with my salespeople on\nappointments. That\u2019s always a good time to strategise with people about what\nthey are going to say. We try to empower rather than manage.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Something new at Accsys is the\nmentorship programme that was recently introduced. \u201cWe\u2019ve been doing mentoring\nall along but this is a bit more structured,\u201d says Teryl.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>In fact, the mentorship programme is the perfect example of what she means about turning spontaneous or sporadic successes into a regular process or procedure.  \u201cIn business, sometimes good things do just happen and they are lovely but informal, so they create pockets of excellence without spreading.
