Air Blow Fans has found a way to get the most out of a diverse bunch of people so that they complement rather than frustrate each other.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>It starts with recognising the value that different personalities and viewpoints bring and, conversely, the dangers of attempting to stamp a culture of clone-like uniformity on business, says Gavin Ratner, managing member.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf everyone\nwas like me, the place would fall apart. It takes all types to be successful,\u201d\nhe says, explaining: \u201cI\u2019m not a detail person at all but my sales manager is\nextremely detailed. He knows it\u2019s not personal and that he has to make sure I\ngive him everything he needs to do his job properly. We understand each other.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>That\nunderstanding is not based on telepathy or even years of working together. It\nstems from the conscious effort that Air Blow Fans makes to ensure its people\nare aware of each other\u2019s different personalities and how to work together\nproductively despite \u2013 or perhaps because of \u2013 those differences.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>The company\nuses professional personality profilers to interview each and every team member\nand then consolidate the results on a group graph that shows the team\u2019s\ncollective strengths and weaknesses, as well as the personality dynamics at\nplay. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe also use\nprofiling before we hire anyone to make sure there is the right fit between the\nperson and the position. If the position needs detail, then the person filling\nthe position must have detail,\u201d says Gavin. \u201cAs Jim Collins said, you must get\nthe right people on the bus in the rights seat before you decide where the bus\nis going.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>With the\nright people on board, in the right positions, they tend to get on with the job\n\u2013 and with each other. \u201cIt means you don\u2019t have to manage people,\u201d he says. \u201cTechnology\nis simple and intuitive and growing the business is the easy part. People\nmanagement is the hardest thing in business. It takes just one bad apple to\ncreate turmoil and dissension.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>The company\ndoesn\u2019t claim to have all the answers but, judging from its staff turnover,\nit\u2019s doing something right. \u201cWe lost one person two years ago and we have\ngrown, gaining three people in the past year,\u201d Gavin says. \u201cUnderstanding each\nother\u2019s personalities helps me and others to interact well.
