Rather let people manage themselves, have the freedom to make\nmistakes and be held accountable for their actions and decisions. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.p4p.co.za\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.tt100.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/P4P_Logo-Darryn-Van-Den-Berg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1226\" width=\"208\" height=\"71\"\/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>This is the essence\nof people management at online learning assessment company Passion4Performance\n\u2013 and while it might sound simple, it\u2019s anything but.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur culture limits\nus in terms of who can work for us. It\u2019s really difficult to find people who\ncan work this way. At school and in their studies, people are not taught to\nthink. Then they come here and have this freedom, and it\u2019s very uncomfortable,\u201d\nsays Darryn Van Den Berg, founder and Visionary MD of Passion4Performance. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>The uncomfortable\npart is that there are only two golden rules for the company\u2019s employees.\n\u201cFirst, you must be able to ask if you don\u2019t know. Second, you must know if you\nare about to drop a ball,\u201d says Darryn. \u201cOur culture is that if you drop the\nball, you have to pick it up.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>In other words, it\u2019s\nall about consequences and accountability. \u201cWe have lots of conversations about\nour culture and we tend to dive into the consequences, and this is causing the\nuncomfortable conversations to become closer to the norm.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Darryn recalls the\ntime he and a young developer went to pitch for a large contract from a\nprospective client. \u201cThis youngster saw me as the boss and he would never say\n\u201cno\u201d if I asked him to complete a task. He said he could do the job we were\npitching for and we took the risk that he could. On the pitch day, we took him\nwith the potential client but the work was not completed and the pitch fell\napart. Holding him accountable in front of the client to fix the challenges \u2013\nas we were experiencing them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>After the experience\nof having to explain his misjudgement to the client, this particular employee\nwas no longer a people pleaser. \u201cImmediately, he started saying no,\u201d says\nDarryn.\n\u201cMicromanaging is easy but I\u2019m a firm believer\nthat people must manage themselves. As far as possible, we try to create an\nenvironment where people set their own goals and targets and make their own\ndecisions.
