To survive in\ntoday\u2019s highly competitive environment, organisations need to be more agile and\ninnovative. A key driver in boosting such a culture is fuelled by a willingness\nto invest in research and development, as well as the ability to learn from\nprevious wins and potholes along the way. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>For many years, Netstar\u2019s basic business has been stolen vehicle\nrecovery, and a solid business it is. Today it is also a driving force in Asset\nTracking and Insurance Telematics. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cNetstar, a subsidiary of Altron, delivers innovation that matters\u201d,\nsays Pierre Bruwer, Group Managing Director for Netstar. \u201cOne of our key\nstrategic objectives is to grow our market share within the IoT and Data\nAnalytics space. With Netstar\u2019s Insurance Telematics, insurance companies can\nnow perform accurate driver behaviour analysis allowing them to manage their\nrisk more effectively. Both solutions rely on our IoT and Data Analytics\nplatforms\u201d, he continued.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;The automotive\nindustry is multi-layered and offers an array of business opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cNetstar provides protection to over 700 000 vehicles and\nhave recovered in excess of 80 000 stolen and hijacked vehicles,\u201d says Quintin\nde Kok, cloud solutions architect at Netstar. \u201cEvery day, our devices stream between\n250 million and 300 million messages to our insurance clients \u2013 some of whom\nbase their whole insurance model on the data we provide.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n<p>Usage-based insurance is one of the fastest-growing\ndata-driven trends. This is where drivers are rewarded or penalised according\nto their driving behaviour. <\/p>\n\n\n<p><strong>Giving drivers\nincentives to drive better<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cAccording to an analysis we did for one large company, the\nbehaviour score of drivers who were incentivised improved by 4% to 5% on\naverage, and 17% more had a 100% score,\u201d Quintin says. \u201cIncentivised drivers\ndrove better than those who knew their score but were not incentivised and\nthose who did not know their score and were not incentivised.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Netstar has been making major inroads into the user-based\ninsurance market on the strength of a combination of factors including: the\nhuge number of Netstar devices installed in South African cars, its highly\nscalable technology platform, the ability to attract and retain top technology\nskills and their strong investment in R&amp;D.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are constantly investing in new technology, spending 3.6%\nof our annual turnover on Research and Development,\u201d Pierre says. \u201cOur\ntechnology strategy is tied to our business strategy of improving revenue\ngrowth, profitability and customer experience, as well as employee excellence.\nTo this end, we have entered into new markets in terms of our local technology\noffering and global presence. Our Asset Tracking solutions allow our customers\nto monitor more than just vehicles, but their high value possessions as well.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n<p>Cycling is a growing sport in South Africa with cyclists on\nexpensive bicycles becoming easy targets for criminals.&nbsp; To help foil them, Netstar has partnered with\nCycleSense to offer cyclists a tracking and recovery solution for their\nbicycles. A first in the South African market.&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Further to local technology growth, Netstar recently entered\nthe Indian car market. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs stated in McKinsey\u2019s July 2018 report profiling India\u2019s passenger-vehicle market, the country is predicted to become the world\u2019s third-largest passenger-vehicle market by 2021; and we intend on maximizing this opportunity from both a consumer and commercial perspective.\u201d, Pierre concludes.
